Honeymoon in Gold Coast Part 1

Pre-honeymoon
Flight
So we booked our flight via Fly Scoot when they had promo back in July 2014. Our tickets cost SGD500/ pax/ 2-way. Cheap eh? I am a crazy traveller where I plan my trip at least 6 months in advance because when the flight gets too expensive, I find that the whole trip is not even worth going. Like now, I am already planning our December trip. Initially we wanted to take SQ but SQ flies to Brisbane and that's a 2 hour drive to GC. So tak per lah.

Accommodation
So anyway, I had plans to go Gold Coast years back and found this sweet apartment. Read lots of good reviews on TripAdvisor here. Yup, love Moorings on Cavill Avenue. So we managed to book this place for our whole trip which FYI, you have to book wayyy in advance as this place is always fully booked!

Car Rental
We both love jeeps and since we know that it is almost impossible to own one here or even drive one that it made sense for us to rent a jeep for our whole trip. So anyway, I have been doing homework about jeep rental for awhile. The cheapest place to book is here. But like everything else, it gets booked really fast. The later you are, the lesser choices of cars and dates you have.  By the time we wanted to book which was like 5 days before our trip, all the jeep wranglers were taken up in the cheap website. Sigh So we ended up booking here and paid 200AUD more. But there's a good side to it which you will find out later.

Day before honeymoon
Both our families had dinner with us at the airport. Our flight was about 10.50pm which by the time we got in, it was just nice for us to board. Since it was a night flight, we managed to catch some sleep. Well I did, Baobei didn't find it comfortable to sleep (and then he complains about not taking SQ hahaha).

DAY 1
Arrived safe and sound, Alhamdulilah. No bumps etc, smooth sailing. After we cleared the immigration, we bought international sim card and find Greg, the guy who is going to pass us our jeep. Initially, we thought we were given the 2006 or 2009 model but since we booked like 2 days before the trip, we got the Jeep Wrangler 2015 Sports Ed. Awesome right? Free GPS which got us to all the places we needed to go with ease.

It was super duper hot! We were actually sun burnt by the time we got to the apartment. Didn't take pictures of the apartment but what you see on TripAdvisor, is really what you will get. But here's a view

Awesome right? I read reviews online where they ask you to request a room with a riverside view. So much love for the apartment. Which by the way, each guest gets their own unique parking space at the basement. So after we washed up, we headed out.

First stop: Carrara Markets.
This probably took 12 minutes from our apartment to there by jeep. It is only open on every Saturday and Sunday from 7am to 4pm.

By the time we arrived there, it was slightly after 1pm so there was very little crowd and well, we were super hungry. So we were finding for food when we came across this Singaporean Chinese uncle who is the owner of this pasta stall. And.... HE HAS THE ROCK WORKING FOR HIM. No, seriously. That guy really looks like The Rock that we actually did a double take. Probably The Rock's doppelganger. Too bad, we didn't take a picture with him. Anyway after lunch, we walked around but couldn't find anything nice. Not sure if it was because it was near closing time or that there is really has nothing there. So we left, empty handed.

Just outside of the flea.

This beauty was ours for the whole week in GC!

So we decided to find the beautiful Surfers' Paradise that people have been talking about. We realized it was a 10 minute walk from our apartment! Super, duper close.

SEDAP SEY THE BUBBLEGUM FLAVOUR!
Costs about 8AUD though.

Loving everything about the beach.

I think after that we just tapau food around the area and headed back to the apartment for dinner. We were quite tired from the whole overnight flight and wanted to start the day early since we are two hours ahead (4pm Singapore time means 6pm GC time).

DAY 2
We had good intentions to wake up early but...

First stop: Movie World

We took about 30 minutes drive from our apartment to here. It was convenient. The roads were pretty straight forward. We bought the VIP pass online where we have unlimited entry to Movie World, Sea World and another world that is just beside Movie World. It costs us about 120+SGD per person, though. But at Surfers' Paradise, you can buy one day pass at a much cheaper price and honestly you will want to explore other places than just amusement parks. Oh wells.

As you can see from the clouds, it started pouring much, much later. So we only managed to take one ride which Superman. It was awesome, especially when it shoots out from the building.

Next stop: Harbour Town
This place is evil. It makes you spend money like you print them at home. It has a lot of outlet stores but dirt cheap kind. I like the baby sneakers a lot. DC lah, Dr. Martens lah. We spend most of our money there. HAHAHAHAIS. There is this nice churros stand over there for 5AUD. We were there until it was closing time 5.30pm (7pm on Thursdays because it is pay day!)

Next Stop: Beachfront Markets
Didn't manage to even step there because it started raining super heavy that we ran into the nearest restaurant and ate fish and chips. Yum.

Day 3
First Stop: Pacific Fair
This is the shopping mall that houses Target and K Mart. Hahahahah, believe it or not, we actually went crazy in there, especially K Mart. Everything we buy, the reasoning behind it is "dirt cheap." Yup, we actually spend slightly more than 300AUD just in K Mart itself. Undies and pyjamas were super cheap. Bought for people things there too cos it is hard not to buy those cute things at such a steal!

We were there until it was almost time to close, which is 5pm.

By evening, is always us back at Surfers' Paradise finding for food. I am not sure if we because we are married and old (I consider 25 too old for night life and stuff), but we would rather be back at the apartment, eating takeouts and watching tevee. One night we watched Ladder 49 which is about this fire fighter and how he started out until a big fire that he was at. Cried pls. Hahaha, tengah feeling feeling bini abang bomba.

We probably spend the whole evening walking around shopping.

Anyway there will be a Part 2 of the Gold Coast entry but will no longer be day 3/4/5/6/7/8 because TBH, I don't remember what we did anymore (as you can read hahah, "we probably") because it has almost been 7 weeks since we went for the trip. Anyway, next trip will be filled with more pictures and what we did that you can too (+ tips we learn along the way) if you're going Gold Coast.

Cheers Mate!

  2. If you really are a "crazy traveller" and if you have indeed travelled enough, you will know that 500/pax two-way to GC on Scoot is definitely NOT CHEAP. Lol. Cheap is 300/pax which Scoot sometimes has. #justsaying because with SQ, you can easily get 600+/pax. Lol so much for planning in advance for cheap tickets. You don't know what cheap flights are don't you.

  3. Thursday is late night shopping in Oz in the suburbs. It's not really pay day. Not everyone in Oz gets paid on Thursdays. Friday is late night in the city.
